Mayors From NJ’s Most Crime-Plagued Cities Hear From Experts On Crime Reduction

NEWARK, N.J. – A one-day conference was staged at Rutgers-Newark University on Wednesday where mayors of some of New Jersey’s most-crime-plagued cities heard from academics and law enforcement experts on how to reduce violent crimes.

The conference was convened by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Paterson Mayor Jose Torres and was attended by mayors of the state’s three largest cities plagued with violent crimes. The mayors sought ways which would allow them to share services so they could combat violent crimes together. Their aim is to address the problems at the root level. The mayors are also already preparing a legislation to forge a shared-services agreement for the three cities.

A number of issues were discussed in the conference. Some experts spoke of the how aggressive policing in minority neighborhoods has lead to debilitating effects. The small number of people responsible for the increased number of violent crimes was also discussed in the conference.
